A massive groundworks package for Crown Bevcan’s new facility at Delta Park in Peterborough is our third consecutive project for main contractor ISG.
Aluminium beverage cans are big business: worldwide, we get through around 370 billion of them every year; we pop open almost 10 billion here in the UK alone!
One of the world’s leading players in this global industry is Crown Bevcan, which is developing a new operation at Delta Park in Peterborough. At 625,000 square feet (58,000m2) it will be the company’s biggest production facility in the world, and create almost 300 new jobs.
We were appointed by main contractor ISG Construction to carry out a large groundworks package for a new manufacturing plant and separate storage facility on the derelict 30-acre site.
Everything about this project is big! It’s valued at over £12 million, and it involves a team of over 65 people. The manufacturing facility is the only one in the world where Crown has two production lines rather than just one, and the storage facility is huge.
The package includes foundations, drainage and services infrastructure. We’re also doing 20,000 square metres of external works including concrete service yards, paths and paving.
On top of its sheer scale, the project presents some complex technical challenges. “We’re doing some very intricate groundworks within the manufacturing facility to prepare reinforced pits and structures for the two production lines,” explains contracts manager Nick Harris. “That’s reflected in the fact that this part of the contract is worth around £3.5 million on its own.“
Delta Park is our third consecutive major groundworks project for ISG Construction. We first worked with them on the Amazon fulfilment centre at Dartford; on the strength of that, they brought us in on the high-rise DHL distribution centre in DP World London Gateway. Our track record for delivery means we’ve become a trusted partner.
