When Pat Gallagher began quarrying for Kentish Ragstone on his Hermitage Estate in 1990, he promised that once he had extracted the stone for construction needs, he would infill the void with inert waste and restore the land to a better quality than was there before. And this is exactly what he has done. "Borrowing the land" is the definitive phrase. Too many quarrying companies in the past have simply taken what they want from the land and left it bare. Gallagher's principle is to reinstate the land after quarrying to a better condition than before and to provide a sustainable future environment.
Over 75 acres of land at Hermitage Quarry have been restored to a combination of agriculture, hedgerows and broadleaved woodland. Reinstatement is an ongoing policy and phases of Hermitage Quarry are continuing to be infilled and restored once the Kentish Ragstone has been extracted.
The restoration of an inert landfill site at Ryarsh was Highly Commended at the MPA Restoration Awards. Click here to view a video on the restoration.
