As a Groundworker, you will be responsible for carrying out a range of groundworks, including excavation, preparation of building foundations, footpaths, car parks, installation of drainage and service systems, and the construction of kerbs, paving, and concrete slabs. You will also be required to carry out surfacing works, including tarmac surfaces and other hardscapes.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
Site Preparation
- Clearing and preparing construction sites for building or civil engineering projects.
- Setting out and levelling the ground according to plans and specifications.
- Forward plan material and equipment to ensure you can complete the tasks ahead.
Ground Excavation
- Digging trenches for foundations, drainage, and utilities using manual tools or machinery.
- Ensuring trenches meet safety standards and depth requirements.
Concrete Work
- Mixing, pouring, and levelling concrete for foundations, slabs, paths, and other structures.
- Installing formwork and reinforcement for concrete structures.
Drainage and Pipework
- Installing drainage systems, including pipes, manholes, and soakaways.
- Ensuring proper alignment, sealing, and gradient of pipes to avoid blockages.
- Installing brickwork to manholes, gulleys, and service pits.
- Testing drainage systems for leaks and functionality.
Utility Installation
- Laying utility services such as water, gas, and electrical conduits.
- Following local utility installation standards and regulations.
Surfacing and Paving
- Laying tarmac, paving slabs, block paving, and kerbs for driveways, roads, and pathways.
- Compacting and levelling surfaces to ensure durability and smoothness.
Landscaping and Finishing
- Backfilling excavated areas and grading land for landscaping purposes.
Equipment Operation and Maintenance
- Operating construction machinery like diggers, dumpers, and rollers.
- Conducting routine checks and basic maintenance of tools and equipment.
Health and Safety
- Adhering to health and safety regulations and best practice, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and other equipment.
- Identifying and mitigating potential hazards on site with Near-Miss reporting.
Collaborating with Other Trades
- Work with your site manager, supervisors, and other trades to ensure programme and quality is achieved.
- Communicating progress and reporting any issues to supervisors or site managers.
Site Clean-Up
- Removing debris and waste materials to keep the site safe and organised.
- Ensuring compliance with environmental and waste management standards.
- Completed tasks and reporting to site supervisors.
- Maintaining records of materials used and equipment operated.
Qualities/Capabilities required:
- Believe in and uphold our company values.
- Valid CSCS Card according to your position.
- Have at least 5 years’ experience in ground working.
- Ideally hold Roller and Dumper Tickets, CPCS or NPORS. (But not a necessity).
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans and drawings.
- Knowledge of health and safety regulations and best practices.
- Right to Work in the UK.
- Valid UK driving license.
