Roots in the Community

Through our ‘Roots in the Community’ education and sustainability initiative, we’re engaging with our community now to enhance our environment for our future.

At our Open Day in July 2022, we officially launched our Roots in the Community project. Every year, we’ll invite local school children in Year 6 to our Hermitage Quarry to plant their own tree as part of our ongoing land reinstatement programme.

Each tree will be named and planted in publicly accessible areas so the children can visit and watch their tree grow.

“Our Roots in the Community Project demonstrates our longstanding commitment to returning the land we quarry back to its original state, if not better,”

Sean Connor, Managing Director, Gallagher Aggregates

Planting the trees will support our restoration work in a number of important ways, including:

Absorb carbon dioxide
and release oxygen

Improve
biodiversity

Provide habitat
for animals

Develop
healthy soil

More generally, trees are fundamental in the fight against climate change by absorbing CO2 from the atmosphere.
