Gallagher Limited constructed a new development in Thurrock for Kier Properties, extending Kier’s portfolio of its Trade City Brand. The development is further enhanced by the addition of a further four larger units under Kier’s Logistics City brand.

The development appears as two separate parks. The Trade City development comprises 12 industrial/commercial retail units of steel frame construction with externally clad profiled metal sheeting and glazed curtain walling. The units incorporate mezzanine floors to part of each unit. In total they have a ground floor area of over 6,000 m2, increased by a further 1,150 m2 with the mezzanine floors.

The four Logistic City units are significantly larger with 14,400 m2 over the ground floors and a further 1,600 m2 with the mezzanine floors. Unit A was pre-let to Selco, the builders merchant.

The site was covered in concrete and tarmac hardstandings and this was lifted, crushed and reprocessed for reuse on site. The works required soils testing, air monitoring and other testing regimes to be undertaken as part of the works. The process allowed the significant reuse of the materials on site.

The new buildings were constructed on traditional concrete pad foundations. Concrete retaining walls were constructed on site to manage the changes in levels incorporated into the works. External surface finish are a mix of reinforced concrete yard slabs, concrete block paving and tarmac. Drainage systems were installed to include Surface Water Attenuation to manage water volumes generated on site before release into the local drainage system.

The existing roads and footpaths which surround the site were replaced as part of the development and enhancement of the area. The works saw Gallagher undertake improvements to the highway and roundabout outside of the Lakeside Shopping Centre to assist in the flow of traffic in the local area.

Gallagher was given this contract by Kier as a result of its successful completion of the Bell Green Retail Park and Frimley Trade City and its proven track record of successfully completing contracts with challenging ground conditions.
