A new 15,400 sq ft Royal Mail Distribution centre in Strood has been construction by Sisk. The new mail centre is located on a 5.4 hectare site at the edge of Strood town centre and processes over 3 million mail items a day.
The building was designed to include sustainable features such as solar walls, bio-mass boilers and solar hot water heating.
Gallagher’s works included bulk excavation of 14,000 m3 of subsoil, placement of 7,000m3 of sub base materials to prepare the site to receive the new 15,400 sq ft building standing upon 900m3 of concrete foundations bases placed by Gallagher. This was followed by the partial installation of internal floor slabs, retaining wall construction and the installation of service ductwork and underground drainage.
Over 2,400 LM of drainage was installed by Gallagher from 100 – 600mm diameter below the site along with 10 Nr separators and rain harvesting units and associated channel drainage to the service areas and access roads.
Nearly 8,000 m2 of reinforced concrete service yard was laid by Gallagher whilst a further 12,000 m2 of sub base was prepared to receive tarmac surfacing and 2,000m2 of permeable sustainable paving was installed to the staff parking area.
Gallagher supplied concrete and aggregate, and disposed of surplus excavated materials to our Hermitage Quarry.
This contract continued Gallagher’s long association with the site as we previously completed the groundworks for the last building to occupy the site, a Tesco distribution unit. The building was demolished and crushed to create aggregate for the construction works.
