Gallagher is undertaking the groundworks contract for Eleclink, a project to establish a high voltage direct current (HVDC) link to transfer and trade electricity between the grid systems in the UK and France. This unique project will involve the design, installation, operation and maintenance of high voltage DC cables in one of the running tunnels of the Channel Tunnel, with AC/DC converter stations and associated high voltage AC connections to the grid systems installed on the Eurotunnel sites in the UK and France.
Zublin, a German ground engineering company, has won the Lot 2 contract to install the piling requirements and associated works for the UK converter station. Zublin approached Gallagher after a recommendation within their organisation from someone who had worked with us in the past.
Our work involves importing 25,000m3 of primary fill from our quarry for piling platforms, the removal of 17,000m3 of piling arisings, 200m of 3-6m high RC retaining walls, 200m of gabion walls, and approximately 2km of drainage and associated works. In addition, our new concrete plant in Ashford will be supplying 17,000m3 of concrete for the piling works directly to Zublin.
The work is being carried out inside the Eurotunnel Terminal, which introduces a layer of complexity when dealing with Eurotunnel Site Rules and Security Restrictions. A proactive and forward looking management approach will be essential to the successful delivery of this project.
