Gallagher Ltd undertook the groundworks contract for a new primary school in Tonbridge, Kent.

There was a temporary school on the site which we needed to work around during the construction of the new school. Following the completion of the school, we constructed a new access road and car parking to complete the works.

The new building has a piled foundation with reinforced concrete beams, caps and ground floor slab. Drainage connects to existing sewers within the site boundary, and incorporates a series of filter drains and an attenuation tank.

There was evidence of Japanese Knotweed on the site and our package included for the management and on site burial of any knotweed contaminated soils in a encapsulated cell on site. There was no cartaway during the first phase of the project as all arisings were kept on site to make up landscape levels. Finished levels were adjusted to balance the earthworks on the site to avoid any unnecessary import of fill or cartaway.

External works consisted of mainly tarmac surfaces, although specialist play surfaces and a MUGA pitch were included in our package.

Galliford Try expressed a preference to work with Gallagher closely during the tender stage to provide assistance with the cut and fill balance, material management plan and cost planning early in the tender process, which helped us to win this contract.

Aggregates and ready mix concrete were supplied by Gallagher Aggregates Ltd’s Hermitage Quarry.
