Aldi Store in Maidstone

Kentish Ragstone continues to play an important part in the fabric of Kent's built environment, as seen in the new Aldi store in Well Street, Maidstone.

Gallagher Aggregates Ltd has supplied 132m2 of dressed Kentish Ragstone Ashlar blocks and quoins, as well as 14 tonnes of 100/250mm Random Rubble walling stone for the new Aldi store.

The Ashler blocks and quoins were used on the store itself whilst the random rubble walling has been used to construct the boundary walls. The store is opposite Maidstone Prison which is built of Kentish ragstone, hence the planner’s desire for the store to fit in with its surroundings.

Kentish Ragstone is the only hard rock available at depth in the South East and hence has been the most commonly used building stone in Kent over the last 2000 years. By choosing to use Kentish Ragstone, Aldi is ensuring that its new store is in keeping with many other buildings and walls in the area, whilst utilising a local resource.
