His Excellency Mr Torbjörn Sohlström, Sweden's Ambassador to the UK, visited Gatwick on Tuesday 2 April to inaugurate Scania’s new state-of-the-art commercial vehicle service centre.  His Excellency was joined at the ceremony by an estimated 150 transport operators together with senior Scania executives and representatives of the site developer/owner, Gallagher Group.

Housed on a three-acre greenfield site just off junction 11 of the M23 motorway south of Crawley, West Sussex and adjacent to the Pease Pottage Service area, the flagship site is home to the latest in a series of strategically-located, £6m purpose-built premises constructed in accordance with a global template created by Scania to serve operators' needs well into the 21st century. As such, Scania Gatwick will provide an extensive range of services and is set to become a focal point for transport companies operating within the region.

Commenting on the development, Martin Hay, Managing Director of Scania (Great Britain) Limited says, “Located on a prime site and equipped with the very latest specialist tools and diagnostic technology, Scania Gatwick sets a new standard for commercial vehicle service in the Gatwick area.  The premises are staffed by an established and experienced Scania team with expertise in-depth.  On behalf of the entire Scania organisation, I would like to wish them every success as they set about delivering the highest possible levels of service to the region’s transport operators.

"I would also like to pay tribute to Gallagher Group’s team, who have worked tirelessly to ensure the impact upon our surroundings has been minimised during construction and that the ongoing environmental performance of the premises will be fully in accord with Scania’s sustainability aspirations.”

For Gallagher Group, Group Chairman Pat Gallagher adds, "Following Gallagher’s successful delivery of the Scania Maidstone Depot, we were delighted when Scania asked us to find a suitable site for another state of the art depot for them near to Gatwick, and subsequently build the new depot for them.  I am very proud with how the Scania and Gallagher delivery teams have worked in unison from start to finish to successfully deliver this project.  Scania is a key partner for Gallagher Group, as a tenant and as a supplier of high quality trucks, and I hope this partnership will continue for many years to come."

Scania Gatwick features four drive-through workshop bays, including facilities for gas-powered and Petroleum Regulations vehicles and a DVSA Authorised Testing Facility (ATF) lane.  In addition to truck customers, the branch will provide a full aftersales service for bus and coach operators and the users of Scania engines.  A full Scania parts service, including parts for all makes, trailers and ancillary components will be offered and the site will house both new and used truck sales operations and a location for Scania Truck Rental.

Sustainability is major factor in the design of Scania Gatwick, which incorporates automatic lighting, an in-house recycling station, a sustainable water drainage system and photo-voltaic roof panels. The premises provide a bright and modern work environment and are equipped with the very latest specialist tools and diagnostic equipment.

Scania Gatwick: home to a wide range of environmental initiatives

As a leading-edge, purpose-built commercial vehicle facility, the development of Scania Gatwick has seen the implementation of an environmental management plan to minimise the impact of the site's construction and to ensure its ongoing sustainability once operational.

Key sustainability features of the site are as follows:

  • The site's truck wash uses rainwater harvested from the roof, further to this the water is recycled a number of times.
  • All water outlets are equipped with consumption-reducing fittings.
  • High efficiency heating is provided to the workshop areas via radiant panels, and air-source heat pumps further improve energy efficiency.
  • Heat recovery units reuse surplus heat collected from the ventilation system.
  • Low energy motion-controlled LED lighting is fitted throughout the premises.
  • Car charging electrical points have been installed together with pre wiring for truck charging.
  • Environmental containment measures include permeable paving to the car parking area and oil separators to safeguard the whole site.
