Plans for new care village in Leeds approved

Plans for a new care village in Leeds, near Maidstone, Kent, were approved by Maidstone Borough Council’s planning committee on 12th December, having been debated at some length at the previous meeting. These plans were approved unanimously.

The care village, which will be developed by English Care Villages, will comprise a 36-bed care home and 99 close care and assisted living apartments together with extensive communal facilities, including a wellness centre, at Ledian Farm, Leeds.

The care village will also form an important community facility, providing a range of 'day care' options for older people and will include a shop, restaurant, cafe, library and craft room. There will also be a meeting room for local clubs and societies. The wellness centre will include a treatment room for GPs, and facilities for relaxation, physiotherapy, and rehabilitation. The facilities will be open to the population of Leeds village which, like many villages, is unable to sustain such services. This feature, together with the employment opportunities being created, led to the general and wide ranging local support for the scheme. The planning committee also acknowledged the high quality of design.

The Gallagher-owned Ledian Farm site is currently a rather dated and unattractive industrial estate that is incompatible with the adjourning conservation area setting of Leeds village and its historic buildings.
