Carbon8
Gallagher has an obligation to maximise the beneficial use of the mineral it extracts at Hermitage Quarry. The washing facility goes some way to achieving maximum benefit from the hassock by-product emanating from ragstone production, but the “silt” fraction has hitherto been discarded to the landfill. However, there are strong indicators that the addition of carbon dioxide into silt and other waste mixes can alter the physical properties of the components.
In partnership with Carbon8 Systems Limited, Gallagher is attempting to take laboratory trials to full scale plant trials using Accelerated Carbon Technology (‘ACT’) to produce light-weight aggregates for construction use.
In addition, this innovative technology can be applied to remediate certain contaminated soils returning processed materials into suitable granular fill materials.
