Aggregates

The production capacity exceeds one million tonnes per annum of product which include:

  • Premium grade washed aggregates and sands
  • Rock armour and gabion
  • Sub-base and capping materials
  • Fill class materials

6A Rip Rap, 6G & Rock Armour

Gallagher produces a wide range of single-sized rock product at Hermitage Quarry, ranging from Gabion stone to Rock Armour.

As well as river and sea defence works, 6G gabion baskets are frequently used as a retaining structure for facing earth embankments and reservoir walls.

Rock Armour is generally required in the 1-3 tonne size range and has been used extensively around the Kent and Sussex coastline.

6A1 & 6C

As a cost-effective alternative to 6A material, Gallagher produces substantial volumes of Kent County Council-approved 6A1 materials as a drainage blanket on new construction and for filling below the water level.

6C starter layer materials are also available and have been used extensively across the region.

Bulk Fill & Hassock

Bulk Fill is used to restore or raise land to the required level to enhance the land area or for development. It has been used successfully on major contracts as a bulk fill/piling mat medium.

Although difficult to control on lower sieve sizes, contractors and engineers have accepted variances from the Highways Specification and adjusted the lower limit threshold by up to 3% without any adverse effects on the material’s performance. It does, however, give the client or their contractor access to a medium that shows substantial cost savings over traditional bulk fill materials. There is a good historic data record of material grading and CBR results from previously completed projects. This can be made available to potential clients before the start of new contracts.
Compared to Ragstone, Hassock is a relatively soft sandy material, with a variable silt content, found between the beds of Kentish Ragstone. It can be used a number of ways: mixed with Kentish Ragstone for lower grade materials; washed and graded for use as a sand replacement; or as a simple bulk fill product without processing.

Type 1 Sub-base

This premium-quality material is used in road building and below paving in all forms of construction. Hermitage Quarry continues to be the main producer of Type 1 sub-base from local, naturally-occurring rock indigenous to the South East.

Gallagher Aggregates Limited has the capacity to produce 500,000 tonnes of this product per year.

6F1, 6F2 & Recycled Capping

These materials are used below Type 1 sub-base or in less specialised construction. Hermitage Quarry can produce over 350,000 tonnes of 6F1 and 6F2 capping material each year from the Kentish Ragstone that underlies the area.

Effective quality control during production and frequent testing by a NAMAS-accredited laboratory ensures the consistency of these products, which have been used on many major building and civil engineering projects throughout south-east England.

The Aggregates Levy on primary won aggregate aimed to encourage greater use of recycled materials throughout the construction industry. Gallagher embraced this new challenge and has established a major recycling facility at Hermitage Quarry. Processed demolition arisings are blended with indigenous materials to produce technically-compliant 6F1and 6F2 capping layer materials for use in specific applications. Crushed concrete hardcore is also processed and screened to meet specific customer demands.
