POUR BLIMEY - CONSTRUCTION NEWS
December 2009
In early November, Gallagher Ltd the construction company based in Maidstone, successfully
poured a total of 1,000 cubic metres of concrete in one week as part of the construction of the
new Cornwallis Academy in Maidstone, Kent. Supplied by Gallagher Concrete, and ferried by a
fleet of 9 of its mixer trucks from its Hermitage Quarry site, the majority of the 1000 cubic metres
was poured to the raft foundations of the new academy building.
A total of 2,018 sq m of floor slab was poured in 4 days with the largest of the pours being 635 sq
m. Further pours were made to blinding concrete, pad foundations, drainage, pits and walls.
Along with 6 operatives, the floor pours were completed with the assistance of a mobile concrete
pump with a 42m boom to place the concrete following the fixing of 90 tonnes of steel bar
reinforcement during the previous two weeks. The floor slab incorporated a multitude of holding
down bolt sets for the new steel framed structure, each of which had to be carefully positioned to
line and level.
The poured floors also contained a large proportion of drainage risers which had to be set up to
line and level as well as being recessed below the floor slab as the area completed included the
new academy kitchen facilities.<
