Horton Park Farm Phases 1&2, Monks Horton, Ashford
Phase 1:
Gallagher were appointed as the Principal Design and Build
Contractor for the construction of this state of the art, organic farm facility
for the raising of beef and lamb stock. The completed complex not only
sets new standards for stock rearing, but also fully embraces the ‘green’
agenda we will all face in the future.
All works were carried out in a live farm environment, with over 30,000 cu m
of spoil cut and filled to form the new site profiles. Timber clad steel framed
buildings with clear spans in excess of 28 metres were then constructed to
house cattle, store farm equipment, compost and silage. The contract
included extensive areas of roads and hard standing together with all fitting
out of bull pens and the like.
All farm effluent has been designed to be treated by passing through an
extensive reed bed system constructed by Gallagher before discharging
into a wetland bio diversity area. The design also ensured all rainwater run
off from the roof area is collected into two 45,000 litre tanks for reuse in
daily farm activities.
Gallagher’s involvement in Hermitage Farm and evident understanding of
and affinity to the ways of farming was instrumental in being selected for
the development and for then ensuring that the project was successfully
completed to a high standard.
Phase 2:
Having successfully completed Phase 1 the team went on to be
appointed to Design and Build Phase 2 of the project which included
additional farm storage buildings along with new farm office buildings
designed to resemble the existing farm complex which dated back to the
1800’s.
Whilst both the design and build met this requirement the modern interior
office space benefits from generous natural day lighting with automated
roof opening windows, under floor heating and in-ceiling cooling. This
represents the first time in-ceiling cooling technology has been used in the
UK. Once again the client’s ‘green’ agenda was addressed with all heated
and chilled water being generated via a ground source heat pump
connected to over 1200 metres of in ground pipe work.
In keeping with the setting of the development and to compliment this
organic farms environmental commitment the team also erected in excess
of 30 bat boxes and 5 owl boxes.
