Spires Academy, Canterbury
A new academy is being built opposite the existing academy in Canterbury.
Gallagher was awarded the contract by Carillion because of:
- its technical knowledge of the project and the risks involved, and its proposals for risk mitigation
- proposals for site logistics, sequencing and programming
- site management proposals
- financial analysis based on rates and pricing provided
- potential value engineering proposals
- quality of submissions
- quantity of clarification and/or exclusions remaining.
Gallagher has been appointed by Carillion to:
- install the concrete ground floor raft slab
- install concrete to the upper floors onto metal decking
- install associated drainage
- install service supplies
- provision of external hard paved areas including access roads, car parks, playgrounds and pathways
- remodel existing ground levels on site to create new sports field areas, drainage and catchment basins.
All excavated materials are being reused on site through the remodelling of existing ground levels. The drainage scheme was designed to ensure that will be no surface water run off. The car parks were laid in permeable paving to allow the surface water to dissipate through the paving into imported gravels and sub soils below. Infiltration and storage vessels were installed to the perimeter of the building and playgrounds to allow water to permeate into the sub soils below. Any remaining surface water flows into shallow catchment basins for storage before being absorbed into the sub soil.
The first stage of Gallagher’s contract was completed in September 2011 and the second stage will begin in mid-2012 when the external hard paving works will be completed. The completed development will be handed over to the clients in July 2012.
