Sainsbury's, Portswood, Southampton

The project comprised a new 50,000 sq ft Sainsbury supermarket together with underground car parking facilities on the site of an old bus station.

Gallagher’s scope of works comprised construction of RC capping beam and piling attendance; followed by bulk earthworks and off-site deposition, prior to commencing the RC substructure foundations to support the store’s steel frame.

The site had extensive attenuation drainage; as well as FW and SW drainage and syphonic drainage systems.

All of the RC upper floors were constructed by Gallagher. These floors were spread over three storeys and housed the sales floor, warehouse, colleague areas, nursery and library. The 338 space car park is located within an undercroft below the suspended sales floor and service yard.

The works also incorporated extensive external works; RC retaining walls and ramps, soft landscaping, street furniture and tree pits and different types and areas of hard landscaping paving dependent on facade location.

Gallagher also undertook S278 works on the three different highway elevations of the development, comprising of FW and SW drainage connections, new refuge islands, attendance works to signals contractor, new combined drainage and kerb, hard landscape paving etc.

This was a significant contract for Gallagher and highlights our strength in the retail sector.
