Restoration of Ryarsh

Over recent years Gallagher Aggregates has operated an inert landfill site at Ryarsh, near West Malling, between Junction 2 of the M26 and Junction 4 of the M20 in Kent. This followed many years of sand extraction by a local brick company, resulting in a large void that remained once they had completed sand extraction.

The site has been infilled with inert waste since 2002 and in July 2011, the infill was complete, with the land being returned to its original landform. The area was then prepared and seeded to return it to agricultural use. A water feature has also been formed as part of the site drainage requirements, which quickly became a well established and permanent wildlife feature of this restored site.

The former landfill site produced a bumper first harvest in the summer of 2012.

The restoration of Ryarsh was Highly Commended at the MPA Restoration Awards. Click here to view a video on the restoration.
