Rainham Mark Grammar School Sports Hall
After a sustained period of intense fundraising by the school, Gallagher has constructed a new sports hall for Rainham Mark Grammar School as Principal Contractor.
The new sports hall was built on one of the school’s fields and as the school remained open throughout the building programme, careful planning and liaison with the head teacher and his staff were very important to avoid inconvenience and exposure to hazards. All deliveries were timed to be outside of busy school periods and measures were taken to avoid disturbance to nearby housing as the school entrance is off a busy residential street.
Internally the sports hall has three badminton courts, cricket nets and provision for a 5 a side football pitch. The remainder of the building houses dance studios, a fitness suite, changing facilities, two classrooms and associated administrative offices.
The new building has a footprint of 1500 m2 and is located adjacent to the existing school on a 1 acre site. The external facade has mixed finishes including 9 metre high micro rib cladding to the sports hall with a brick face to the lower level extensions.
The construction comprised pad foundations with ground bearing slab supporting a structural steel frame. The fit out included a combination of under floor heating, air conditioning and ventilation, lighting and power, hot and cold water installations, electrical installations for equipment and music systems, external lights and new service mains. External works included self draining car parks, hard and soft landscaping, external walls and fencing and foul and surface water drainage installations. Care was taken to ensure that the external works were sympathetic to the existing site layout and trees on site.
This scheme was ideally placed for Gallagher to bring its full range of operations to the scheme. All aggregates and concrete were sourced locally from its own quarrying operation and the ground works and civil engineering were undertaken by its in-house resources.
