Castacrete at Medway City Estate
Gallagher Ltd, acting as Principal Contractor, constructed a portal frame building to house a new paving manufacturing processing plant in Strood, Kent for Castacrete Ltd. This additional building was required to both expand and enhance Castacrete’s current manufacturing facilities on the site.
In October 2013, Gallagher received a call from Castacrete, which had a highly-specialised piece of manufacturing equipment on the way and needed a building to put it in. Castacrete is a major manufacturer of pre cast concrete products, for both the construction industry and the retail market.
Working with dha Planning, Gallagher took hold of the project and ensured the design was prepared, planning permission obtained, materials procured and the building constructed - including specialist rails inserted into the ground slab to very fine tolerances - ready for the specialist machinery to be delivered. This was all carried out in a live operational environment and the £1.3 million project was completed at the end of May to enable the specialist machinery to be installed in June 2014.
To ensure that the new building met all of Castacrete’s requirements, it was necessary for Gallagher Ltd to work very closely with the three separate foreign manufacturers who supplied plant to this new facility.
The building covers a footprint of 1,875 sq m/20,175 sq ft and has a maximum height to eaves of 12m. It has a steel portal frame clad on both roof and walls with insulated steel cladding. The roof has in excess of 10% roof lights to introduce natural light into the building. The building has an automated manufacturing area and a separate curing area.
The construction of the building involved the remodelling of the existing service yard and alterations to drainage and services.
